3. Early History
● 1990: Inside DEC WRL, I had
CSNET, BarrNet, AlterNet as
my transit providers
● So, I gave them a DELNI to
exchange traffic over
● 1993: When I left DEC, this
unofficial IX was discovered
by the auditors
● “What the hell is this?”
● 1994/1995: Hired back as a
consultant to commercialize
“DIX” which became “PAIX”
● “El Palo Alto” is a tree...
4. Modern History
● 1996-1997: DEC hires Al Avery and Jay Adelson to
run PAIX, who then leave to found Equinix
● 1998-1999: DEC acquired by Compaq, who sells
PAIX to Abovenet, who is acquired by MFN
● 2000-2001: MFN acquires my ISP company (MIBH),
appoints me President of the PAIX business unit
● 2002: MFN enters bankruptcy, later emerges as
AboveNet, having sold PAIX to Switch and Data
● 2009-2010: Switch and Data acquired by Equinix
● 1993-2010-beyond: F-Root first/always at PAIX
